This fledgling FT club is now AAFTA sanctioned and seeking a permanent home, however the first ever THAGC FT match was in Selma, NC where a landowner mowed his field to provide a place for 14 shooting lanes. LOL…for some targets it was necessary to shoot “around or between the stubble” going across the killzones!  The target locations were previously marked with numbered stakes and early arriving shooters set up the targets prior to the “shooters meeting”.

The match started out rather cool in the 50s with an occasional drop or two of rain, however half way through the match it started raining enough to get the equipment and score sheet wet unless covered, then the rain subsided and the match was completed under cloudy but dry skies as the temp rose to 79 degrees. The variable/swirling wind never ceased during whole match so the combination wind plus no rain dried the equipment out very nicely by match end.

This match had a rather large percentage of first time field target shooters so it was determined that all the Gamo field target killzones would be “un-reduced”. Also, during the “shooter’s meeting” there was a “question and answer” session concerning springer vs PCP shooting since there was a high percentage of novice shooters present. For the match some of the new shooters were loaned rifles that were kindly provided by other shooters, so ALL had a good time shooting! The unreduced Gamo targets made for some a very easy close targets, however the unreduced Gamo kill zones created some real “butt squeezer shots” for the longer distances with the swirling variable winds (4-14mph)! The lanes were broken down by shooters after the match and then there was the “awards ceremony”. Also, some new folk came to observe and shoot a few targets without actually entering the match.

As a side note….for this match I even had a “first” by shooting my .177 R9 at NEAR the 12fpe level (CPL @ 830fps) instead of my usual 14.5 fpe level. LOL….quite a “schoolin” I had shooting “Nerf power” for the first time in a match!

Eric who I was squadded with shot the match in “hunter class” with his BAM B26, 3-9 power scope, sittin’ on the ground. LOL…..imagine a hunter class shooter with no bucket, no cross stick, a 9x max scope with no range tape around the AO! If you notice Erics BAM B26 score it shows that most everyone who practices with their rig can shoot field target and knock down a satisfying number of targets!

Many positive comments were made by the “new inductees to the sport”, all had a great time (myself especially), and I wish to personally thank Scott, Chris, the land owner who acted as safety officer for the match and all who helped make field target a reality in North Carolina!
